Celcom CEO on Facebook

It is very rare to see Celcom being open. I'm not Celcom saying that they are not friendly to the public or to their customers, but what they they are doing is just not enough(for me).

I have been following the Facebook page of Celcom's CEO for months now and I thought it will just be quiet as the man himself could be busy with his work just as any CEOs out there. And another reason is- Yes, especially when it is coming from Celcom.

But I was wrong.

Dato' Sri Mohammed Shazalli bin Ramly, the CEO of Celcom is active on Facebook, at least a few times a week. On Feb 19 2010, he announced a contest that allowed his 1,7xx fans to win a Blackberry Bold and the response was amazing! Good work Dato' Sri.

Now if only Celcom could learn something from their own CEO, they could do better to win their customer's heart.

Note: The Facebook fanpage of Dato' Sri Mohammed Shazalli bin Ramly is a personal account

Celcom and Friendster in talks

Celcom is in talks with Friendster to bring the social networking service to Celcom's mobile subscribers.

I have no details regarding the deal, but it should be announced within the next few weeks, maybe a month. Those who don't know, Friendster has been acquired by Malaysian-based MOL Global last month.

Celcom Twitter-SMS

It's not a perfect service and Celcom has failed to make that clear to customers.

First using this service, you wouldn't know if someone replies to your tweet. Second, you need to manually follow someone even if your Twitter SMS mobile number is linked to your Twitter account. Third, you cannot check or do Direct Message.

On top of that, command words like "unfollow" plus a list of other possible command words appear to be missing from the Celcom Twitter-SMS page on Channel X. Celcom, where are the list of commands/keywords for using this Celcom Twitter-SMS?

This service is suppose to integrate with the current Twitter service. Is Celcom trying to create a whole new Twitter again?

I am pretty sure that Celcom makes a lot of money at RM1/week for a "perfect" service like this.

Celcom Broadband Basic Youth Package

This plan is probably available for about a month now.

Basically, the Celcom Broadband Basic Youth Package is targeted to those between 18 to 25 years old. The monthly fee is RM50 and speed is capped at 384Kbps for 5GB a month.

My opinion: Go for Maxis Advance Lite Youth Plan at RM48 per month for 2GB(2-3Mbps) or if you have a DiGi postpaid plan, sign up for the Internet Unlimited Monthly 58 at RM58 per month(700Kbps-3Mbps).

Reason?: RM50 for a speed at 384Kbps is not good enough especially when youths today consume a lot data and requires faster broadband speed. Plus competitor's network is less congested and has more value for money.

Mobile Network Status during Christmas Eve

It was the night before Christmas and you probably had problems to make a call, send an SMS or connect via mobile broadband.

There was problem with the Maxis and Celcom network, although I don't expect the Celcom network to go down till the 5th day of Christmas(Celcom has the best prepaid charging system). Surprisingly there were no reports on DiGi.

It is common that the telcos would have a standby team to handle unexpected high traffic during festive seasons. If you faced problem with your telco yesterday, in most cases it means that the network(base station) at your area was congested, or the whole network can't handle million of customers at one time.

Here's a short compilation of tweets from mobile users who were frustrated with their mobile operators between yesterday night till early this morning:

Maxis:
A number of reports on slow broadband speed or can't connect.

Celcom:
There were reports that Celcom Broadband was slower than dial up speed(dial up speed is about 56Kbps), and a number of users can't connect. However the service recovered during noon.

DiGi:
I tested DiGi EDGE, voice and SMS during midnight and all of it was working fine. If you did face problem with DiGi, then it was not a nationwide problem but more to a specific location.

The compilation above is just to show you the on-going network problems yesterday. There could more users out there who had problems but did not tweet about it or most probably they are not on Twitter.

A simple guide to choosing a Mobile Broadband service

Are you not decided on which mobile broadband service to choose? Here's a simple guide for you.
Before you read below, please check out my blog post on "Mobile Broadband is not for Everyone".

Coverage
If you are getting a mobile broadband service for use while traveling, choose between Maxis Broadband and Celcom Broadband. Celcom may have more 3G/2G coverage areas compared to Maxis in Malaysia but Maxis could offer faster speed than Celcom considering that Celcom Broadband has about 3 times more broadband subscribers than Maxis.

Conclusion: Go for Celcom Broadband when it comes to coverage.

Speed

Speed really depends on current network traffic and overall network subscribers. As Celcom has the highest number of mobile broadband subscribers(about 500k), I personally do not recommend Celcom Broadband if you are looking for speed.

You may choose between Maxis Broadband, P1 WiMAX, DiGi Broadband and U Broadband after you consider the options below based on your requirements:

Maxis Broadband- More than 100k broadband subscribers(may not get high speed all the time and in all areas), but it offers the best coverage among the 4 above.

P1 WiMAX- About 100K subscribers and speed is very much dependent on location and signal strength. Coverage is not there yet for mobile broadband but expanding aggressively.

U Broadband- Network is not congested and may offer you speed about 1Mbps at most of the time, but lack of good 3G coverage.

DiGi Broadband- Could offer high speed broadband at the moment but lack of good 3G coverage for mobile broadband.

Conclusion: It is a hard decision to make but if you are looking between standard coverage and speed than Maxis Broadband is recommended.

Price
From a price perspective, all of them (mobile broadband providers) have very attractive packages, as low as RM40. Some packages comes with USB modem as well. Refer their websites:
Conclusion: Refer to the ISP websites

Note that experience on a mobile broadband service may vary depending on location and current traffic load that the network is handling. You may want to pick a package that offers a trial period before subscribing.

9 Free Blackberry Apps

You can download 9 free Blackberry apps from the Celcom website for free. Anyone could download it since you just need to enter your email address and Celcom will send you the download link for your Blackberry.

Some of the apps are- Facebook, Flickr, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Nav4All and more.

Celcom Website: A brand new look

Celcom has managed to give their website a new look, thanks to the smart peoples working there. If you visit www.celcom.com.my now, you will see the new page as below.

The only annoying thing is that most or probably half of the links that you click will open in a new tab or a new browser.

The whole site is clean and simple, with each services has their own page with different design- Postpaid, Prepaid, Business and Broadband. However Celcom should ensure that these four main categories are prioritised on the front page.

Overall the site is easy to navigate. Good work.

P.s: It took Celcom about two years(probably more) to give the site a new look after numbers of critic on their previous 100% flash website.

Celcom Unlimited Data Plan at RM38

New Celcom Broadband plan at RM38 per month with max speed of 128Kbps, no contract.

You can only subscribe it with a postpaid voice plan and data is limited to 500MB per month. If you exceed this data limit, you will experience slower speed for the month.

This data plan has been available for sometime in Celcom but it was only offered to selected customer(on invitation).

I will like to thank Celcom to make a first move in offering such low entry package. I did mention in April that such entry level data plan "could drive the adoption of mobile application on mobile phones". Read "Mobile Internet: Speed vs Connectivity".

To subscribe, you need to walk in to Celcom Branch and fill up a form although this is an add on service to your postpaid line (unlike DiGi, you can just make a call to subscribe for data). Celcom's number one service?

Question:

Why is Celcom calling this broadband at 128kbps when even DiGi don't claim their faster EDGE at 200Kbps as broadband?

P.s: Are you aware of the new Celcom Blackberry Prepaid and Postpaid 2G offerings? Read "

50% off for calls on Celcom Today

Remember the day when Celcom left customer's in the dark without mobile service? Well, the problem actually went on for the next 2 days.

Celcom is offering 50% call rates just for today for both postpaid & prepaid. Don't get too excited about it because the 50% rate is only applicable when calling within the network(to another Celcom number).

It is a shame that Celcom did not make any direct communications with their customers(example, send SMS) to inform them about this half rate calls. The only thing they did was to put a banner on their heavy loading flash website. Maybe we should get Celcom to pay our Internet bill instead.

Personally, I think Celcom should have compensated customers. For an example rebate on access fee for postpaid customer since they are paying to access the Celcom network. As for prepaid, they should give out free airtime when customers top up their account. If Celcom think that giving half rate on voice for one day could bring back customer loyalty then they are wrong.

P.s: I know a couple number of people who has port out from Celcom for the past one week, how about you?

Service Disruption on Celcom Network

If you were in one of the "Ini adalah Wilayah Celcom", you might had trouble in making and receiving calls using Celcom.

Muktamad! Celcom's network went down last Thursday(24 September, 09) started about 9.30am leaving more than a million Celcom users in the dark for more than 10 hours. Please read official news here.

Although Celcom claims the problem has been resolved, yet a number of users has been complaining on the 25 September 09 that they were some difficulties in making and receiving call, plus delayed SMS & slow mobile broadband.

When Celcom merged with TM Touch, the cellular unit of Telekom Malaysia in the year 2003, it lost a number of mobile users through the years. Back then Celcom was the leading telco in the country, because it had the right branding and network quality was great.

The new Celcom that we see today is different. They are at least 5 operators sharing the traffic on Celcom's GSM network(U Mobile, XOX, Tune Talk, Merchantrade, REDtone) making it the largest GSM network in the country with one of the highest traffic. The question here is, can Celcom handle these traffic? Apparently, we have seen the results for the past two days. Are they planning for more MVNOs?

Their 3G network currently has the highest traffic in the country with over 420,000 mobile broadband users and these numbers does not include normal data usage on the phone and other sources (such as the TNB Meter readers, ATMs..etc).

When a user has problems with their mobile service, the 1st thing they would do is to contact the customer service. When Celcom's network went down last Thursday, the second thing went down was their Helpline(1111), and at the same time they were no immediate updates on Celcom's website or their accounts on social networking until a couple hours later but it was too late.

It is important to use all sort of communications to let their own customers know about the network breakdown before even the customers find out, but Celcom choose to leave them in the dark. Even yesterday, no sms or apologies where sent out to customers. Is this the NUMBER 1 experience that Celcom is trying to give?

What Celcom should have done:
  • Update their social networking status- They should have communicated with a number of their mobile users using their existing accounts in social network such as Facebook.
  • Update their website- Their web team was extremely slow in putting up a notice on their website when the network went down. Supposedly, the notice should be up within an hour but I guess not many users even bothered to visit the Celcom website thanks to its superb design and outdated contents.
  • Domestic Roaming- When Celcom network was having problem, Maxis and DiGi network did not had any issues. If only there was a domestic agreement signed between these telcos, this post won't even exist because they wouldn't be any users complaining.
  • Send an apology message- Did Celcom notice that a large number of people was cursing them on Twitter? If I were Celcom, I would have sent a direct apology message to all these Celcom customers including those cursing for not being able to call a Celcom number.
  • Rebates/Discount on billing/airtime- Should Celcom customers get free calls/usage for one day? Let's see how Celcom value their customers.
Before I forgot, in 2007 here's what Celcom claimed- Number 1

The last time I reported Celcom had network problem was in November last year.

Hotlink to offer Blackberry Plans as well

This is a follow up on my earlier post "Celcom- 1st to offer Prepaid Blackberry"
Hotlink on last week has also announced that it would offer a prepaid Blackberry plan for the Blackberry Curve 8520, that will be launched within this month.

I don't have much details on the Hotlink Blackberry Prepaid plans, but similar to Celcom you can pre-order the new Blackberry Curve 8520 here.

As for Celcom, three Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) data plans will be available on the Xpax Blackberry plan- day, week and month. Also it is believed that Celcom will subsidise the Blackberry Curve 8520, allowing the price to fall slightly below RM1,000.

I have been using the Blackberry Curve 8520 for almost 3 days now. Although it does not have 3G & GPS, the experience so far has been good with battery life lasting more than a day, on moderate use. However I think Blackberry for the consumer market would be useless if they(consumer) cannot afford the Blackberry data plans. I hope both Celcom & Maxis will offer acceptable pricing for the Blackberry Internet Service and not to forget, education on Blackberry for the consumers.

Celcom- 1st to offer Prepaid Blackberry

UPDATE 1- Here's the link- http://www.xpax.com.my/blackberry/
Celcom might be the 1st in Malaysia to offer a Blackbbery with a prepaid plan. The new low end BlackBerry Curve 8520 will come with Xpax however no details about pricing for the Blackberry service yet.

The phone is expected to cost around RM1,200 probably cheaper if Celcom subsidised the phone, but official pricing and phone availability is only expected to be available around September.

An source close to Celcom claims that a pre-order for the new
BlackBerry Curve 8520 with Xpax will be available soon. I will update this post once I have the link.

Check out
BlackBerry Curve 8520 specification here or visit this link for more info on the device.

Celcom wants to "learn and improve"

With the challenging market outlook, Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad (Celcom) stays positive by treating it as a chance to learn and improve itself.

“I would say this challenge has affected us positively as a company, where we can turn around a challenge into an opportunity to learn how to quickly adapt to changing market conditions with greater flexibility and speed,” said CEO Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly.

Recognising the many areas that need further improvement, the company will do what it takes to continue meeting its customers’ needs.

“Armed with our superior network, products and a highly committed workforce, the market situation now will put us in gear to tackle this year’s main aim, which is to improve the overall revenue market share,” he said.

Celcom is also taking a few concrete measures to achieve its goal, the first of which is to leverage on its network coverage and quality of service, as well as to work on segment-specific engagements and increase demand for mobile data and broadband.

More on Celcom Broadband

Update 1: At Pavillion just now and Celcom 3G was terribly slow with too many packet loss. Had to reload a page a could number of times.

My experience on Celcom Broadband has been pretty bad over the past one week. I am wordless so I leave it to Malaysians to express it.
Celcom Broadband MSN problem that I have complained to Celcom for a number of times
